Dr. Shani Stern, PhD
Our lab studies mechanisms of brain disorders using patient-derived neurons and organoids. We start from a patient’s blood sample and reprogram his blood cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The induced stem cells are then differentiated as neuronal monolayer cultures and brain organoids. We then employ electrophysiology and molecular assays to seek disease mechanisms with the aim to find new therapeutic targets. Our lab is multidisciplinary and focuses on Parkinson’s disease, bipolar disorder, and an autism spectrum disorder.
